Repairing archives using Par/Par2 files

E-mail Print PDF

Tools you'll need:

  • Quickpar
  • Winrar (To extract the archive once it's repaired)

One of the major disadvantages to downloading files via Usenet is that sometimes files can be incomplete. This can be especially true if the file you're downloading is a split archive. Thankfully there's a solution to this problem. If the poster included Par/Par2 files you can easily repair any given file in the archive. For example, say you're downloading something that is split into 50 rar files. If the poster included PAR files you would simply need to download one of the included PAR files, open it in Quickpar, and select repair.

It gets even better if the poster included PAR2 files. If this is the case all you need to do is check how many blocks you're missing using Quickpar and then download the given PAR2 file that supplies enough blocks to repair the archive. For example, if you were missing 5 blocks you would simply look for a PAR2 file that shows "+5" or more in the filename of the included PAR2 file, download it, and finally repair the archive. Once the archive is repaired you can extract it as you normally would using Winrar.
